Rutherford County

Located in the western piedmont of North Carolina, Rutherford County is on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure of Dirty Dancing fame. The eastern and central parts of the county are historically textile rich and are home to the towns of Forest City and Rutherfordton.

In April 2019, the Hometown Strong Action Team joined Rutherford County and several towns in a series of listening sessions to hear about the strengths, challenges, and opportunities their communities face. The Hometown Strong Action Team toured a Facebook data center and attended a large stakeholder meeting hosted by Isothermal Community College.

Rutherford County’s proximity to major interstates and history as a textile and manufacturing hub has helped attract and retain a number of industries. Investments in downtowns and attractions have continued to put the county on the map as a place for tourism.

Hometown Strong Action Team members and local leaders identified local government planning and capacity, broadband, and workforce development as priorities and possible points of state and local collaboration.
