Surry County

Located in the piedmont of North Carolina, Surry County is home to Mount Airy, Andy Griffith’s hometown and inspiration for Mayberry, and Pilot Mountain State Park. Located along the Yadkin Valley winemaking region, Surry County is home to a number of vineyards and wineries and hosts the annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival.

In June 2019, the Hometown Strong Action Team joined Surry County and several towns in a series of listening sessions to hear about the strengths, challenges, and opportunities their communities face. In addition, the Hometown Strong Action Team toured Surry Community College’s viticulture and enology program, a one of a kind program that teaches students how to grow and make wine.

Surry County’s proximity to major interstates and history as a textile and manufacturing hub has helped attract and retain a number of industries. Home to a state park and “Mayberry,” Surry County has seen a continued surge in tourism that has spurred growth and development of small businesses along downtowns.

Hometown Strong Action Team members and local leaders identified preventing and treating the opioid addiction as a priority and possible point of state and local collaboration.
