Washington County is in the Coastal Plain and is grouped regionally for economic development with Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans and Tyrrell Counties. Originally formed from Tyrrell County in 1799 and named after George Washington.

Its agricultural products include corn, soybeans, peanuts, tobacco, cotton, cabbage, sage, beans, potatoes, hogs, and poultry. Manufactured products include wood pulp, paper, plywood, lumber, pallets, clothing, rope, and processed peanuts. Plymouth is the county seat and was incorporated in 1807. As of 2018, the population was estimated to be around 11,859.
