Wilkes County

Located in the piedmont of North Carolina, Wilkes County is located along the Yadkin River and is home to Stone Mountain State Park and was once known as “the moonshine capital of the world,” boosting its claims as the birthplace of NASCAR. The county and towns of North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro host numerous festivals including the Shine to Wine, Brushy Mountain Apple, and MerleFest.

In August 2019, the Hometown Strong Action Team joined Wilkes County and several towns in a series of listening sessions to hear about the strengths, challenges, and opportunities their communities face. In addition, the Hometown Strong Action Team toured multiple facilities in the county, including the Wilkes County Airport.

Wilkes County’s proximity to major interstates and history as a textile and manufacturing hub has helped attract and retain a number of industries including the Samaritan’s Purse. Festivals and investments in the downtowns of Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro have spurred a surge in tourism leading to growth and development of small businesses.

Hometown Strong Action Team members and local leaders are working to identify priorities and possible points of state and local collaboration.
