Rural Grants News & Stories

Everything You Need to Know About PFAS

This summer, our office hosted Savannah Sinor and Abigail Carpenter through internships to support the work of the Rural Grants team. They compiled a series of short articles on how PFAS are impacting water and sewer districts across the country and relevant news to help you learn more.

Stories of Success in Western North Carolina

This series on rural challenges and success stories in Western North Carolina, commissioned by Hometown Strong, Governor Cooper’s initiative to support rural communities, focuses on food system challenges and opportunities in the western region. Each essay is a lightly edited interview with Abigail Carpenter, the HTS Narratives of Success Apprentice with Hometown Strong.

Abigail Carpenter is from Lansing, North Carolina. She is a rising junior at Yale University studying Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Justice. She is passionate about rural equity, and food systems. This summer, she is an intern with the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ Hometown Strong. In addition to her work on grant research and applications, she has dedicated half of her internship to examining common challenges and success stories from rural organizations and nonprofits in Western North Carolina.  You can contact Abigail by email or on LinkedIn
